ADA APA DENGAN CINTA? THE ADAPTATION STRATEGY FROM FILM INTO NOVEL IN INDONESIA

Alberta Natasia Adji, Indonesia, ID CLEaR2016-324;      Since its first debut in 2002, Ada Apa dengan Cinta? or What’s Up with Love? has sparked the trend of romance-teenager movies in Indonesia. Years later, director Mira Lesmana announced that the production team would make a sequel to the movie entitled Ada Apa dengan Cinta 2? Right before the release of the sequel in 2016, the novelization of the first film was published to bridge the gap between the older and younger audience generations. The article deals with the adaptation strategy which happened in the process of the derivative novel production from the perspective of Pierre Bourdieu’s symbolic power. Then, the study applies the sociology of literature approach in revealing the novelization strategy in the field of cultural production. The hypothesis will aim for the significant change in Indonesian art and film world, particularly in maintaning the rise and fall of audience response in perceiving book-adapted movies.
