Making English Spelling and Pronunciation Logical (regular paper)

Slovakia,  ID Výzvy2016-494;           Teaching English spelling and pronunciation for beginning learners in ESL classrooms is generally practised through repetition drill. Since the English language is a non-phonetic language, that is, there is no direct relationship between the spelling and the sound; there are many exceptions to the spelling and pronunciation of words. However, there are also many consistencies that may be very helpful in ESL teaching and learning. In native speaking environment, teaching English spelling and pronunciation does not happen in any random way. Learners follow the set of rules called “Phonics” that are carefully introduced by the teacher. The aim of both the paper and the workshop is to introduce helpful ideas on how to make the correspondence of English spelling and pronunciation logical, helpful and interesting adopting the method “Phonics” into ESL classrooms.
