Teaching Academic Vocabulary: Why, How, When?
Sara Fine-Meltzer, Israel, ID LLCE2016-215 A major stumbling block to reading comprehension in English is poor vocabulary. While it is often thought that academic vocabulary can, and most often does wait for university/college study, it is my contention that vocabulary can and ought to be actively taught much sooner. The subject of this paper is teaching vocabulary in an “old-fashioned” setting. The proposed setting is adaptable to all levels of English learning, but is particularly important for students living in countries where the indigenous language or languages are written in non-European scripts.
